The inspiration for this proposal began in the spring of 2010. Wesley Church’s Social Concern Team developed a project to encourage members’ active involvement in planting and donating fresh, nutritious food to those in need, particularly residents of the downtown and South Side neighborhoods of Bethlehem. The idea of creating a community garden seemed out of our reach, initially. To start, we sowed the seeds for a community garden by giving congregation members tomato plants to grow and nurture in their respective gardens. When the plants bore fruit, members would take the harvest to a local food bank. The project was a tremendous success. We distributed more than 100 tomato plants and received over 400 pounds of tomatoes and other vegetables that were donated to local food banks.
