I wanted to follow up with everyone with a few things from our previous meeting.
There will only be one pickup this week on Tuesday, Carol Beach is not available the next two Thursdays.
First, I would like to schedule 2 work dates on Saturdays in October. We have two tasks at hand. One is to clean up our gardens and the other is to consolidate our mulch pile(s) into a single pile. First frost may come as early as October 5th, and almost certainly by October 18th. If you have planted fall vegetables you can certainly continue past these dates, but generally speaking most of us will want to clean up by then. Bring garbage bags, any diseased plants such as tomatoes, should be bagged and thrown out with your trash. Other healthy plants can be composted provided we are not overflowing!

To date we have donated over 500 pounds of produce to 3 local Food Banks, New Bethany Ministries, Trinity Episcopal Church, and St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Outstanding work everyone! We could not have done it without your help and support! I cannot express how thankful and blessed I’ve been to have each and every one of you as part of this project!
During the meeting, we discussed what we’ve accomplished this year, and some of the challenges we faced. In addition, we discussed some ideas for next year, and some ways we can stay involved over the fall and winter. We learned that a lot of us had the most enjoyment when we were socializing and interacting with other gardeners including work days. Next season, we will have more opportunities to get together including perhaps sharing some food we prepared from our gardens.
Fencing will be something we will be pursuing next year, whether through donations or grant money. I will be seeking grant opportunities early next growing season, but it is unclear what those efforts will bring us. We will also be looking for a picnic table we can add to the garden area.
We also discussed doing better with composting next year. Clarke Chapman offered some great advice in that regard, including the advice that any leaves we can get in the compost bin will help with our “brown matter” that we desperately need. Also shredded paper, coffee grounds (which Starbuck’s and other provide free), and kitchen scraps including orange peels.
Further we discussed some things we learned such as types of plants that demand more space, staggering the planting of some plants and offer those who wish to partner with other gardeners to grow certain types of crops and exchange amongst ourselves. We would also try to coordinate our efforts in purchasing plants early in the season.
Lastly, we wanted to show some documentary movies (movie nights) regarding the status of food production in the United States as part of awareness and concern for an agricultural system that is in a precarious state. Those movie nights would be open to the entire congregation, and should be posted well in advance.
Having done most of the upfront work, we are well positioned for the next growing season. I expect we will all be able to reap the fruits of our hard labor next year!
