Garden Updates — 690 lbs. donated and story!

Good Morning Gardeners,

Happy Monday. I took another 25 lbs. of produce to New Bethany this morning, including 25 lbs. of tomatoes, beans, peppers, and radishes. We will do another pickup on Wednesday night. Also if you are interested, this is a reminder that tonight is the first session of the Sustainable Table Fellowship at the home of Deborah Appler & Bill Arnold. I also wanted to share a heartfelt story. Dan & Karen Brown donated a couple of backpacks, and gave them to me yesterday to take to New Bethany.

I took the backpacks and some garden produce to New Bethany this morning, and Brandy (one of the staff), said backpacks, are you kidding me! I said, no these are for you. Then she proceeded to tell me the story of a mother who has some mental disabilities, of very little means and has been raising a daughter who is now attending Freedom High School. Every day this woman would come in and ask if they had any backpacks for her daughter, who has been carrying her books to and from school every day. Every day, Brandy had to tell this woman no, she didn’t have any backpacks for her. She was so excited now, that she could give this woman a backpack for her daughter. She knew of our backpack program and she praised it very highly. She said over the last 13 years that she’s been there not too many stories get to her, but this woman’s story really broke her heart. Thank you so much! This is a great reminder of the value or the work we do.

Sustanable Table Fellowship Group Opportunity — 09/16/2013

Hello Everyone!

On behalf of the garden , we would like to invite you to be part of the Sustainable Table Fellowship group. Please join us!

When: We will be having our first session on Monday, September 16th at 6:30PM, and is expected to last from 6:30PM-8:00PM. We will embark on a seven week journey that meets each Monday to discuss topics covered in our reading as well as enjoying fellowship.

Where: The home of Deborah Appler and Bill Arnold, located at 66 West Greenwich Street in Bethlehem. If you are familiar with the intersection of Main St & Elizabeth Avenue, they are located one block North and one block East of that intersection. At the bottom of this message is a map that you may find helpful.

Pot-Luck: We ask that if possible, please bring a dish — a side, a salad or a dessert. For this meeting we have no expectations of origins of the food or how it was grown, so please don’t be afraid to bring a favorite! Please let us know what you are planning on bringing so we can ensure a variety!

Our Text: Making Peace with the Land: God’s Call to Reconcile with Creation by Fred Bahnson. We will have multiple copies of the book available at our first meeting at a cost of $15.00.

Throughout the course of our study of our book, we will focus on the relationship outlined in this quote: “Thoughtful eating reminds us that there is no human fellowship without a table, no table without a kitchen, no kitchen without a garden, no garden without viable ecosystems, no ecosystems without the forces productive of life, and no life without its source in God.” – Norman Wirzba

Please let us know if you plan on attending so we may plan accordingly. If you are unable to attend the first meeting, but are still interested in being a part of this group, please also let us know.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you,
The Sustainable Table Fellowship Team

Garden Updates — 09/09/2013 — 595 lbs. donated!

Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone has been enjoying the last few days of nice weather, and everyone is adjusting well to the new school year. Things have been steadily producing at the garden. I was out at the garden last night harvested some tomatoes, peppers and some of my carrots. There are plenty to be had, in fact it would be my suggestion to harvest your produce more frequently as we move into the cool weather. Many tomatoes have over ripened and have gone bad, and some others had started to show signs of blight (a fungus that starts at the bottom of the tomato). However, there are many, many good tomatoes, and at this point even harvesting multiple times a week is probably not sufficient. With that said, I will be out again on Wednesday night again to harvest whatever we can for pick up night. Carol Beach tends to get to the church after 8PM or 9PM, so there is a large time window to harvest. I do hope that you are getting some vegetables for your families as well, there certainly is more than enough for all. Although if you are tired of tomatoes, I certainly understand!

We are rapidly approaching last year’s 606 lbs. it also looks like our 2011 number was 607 lbs., we will certainly break those numbers, and hopefully aim for at least 700 lbs. or even 800 lbs. I would also like us to start thinking about some workdays in early to mid-October to prepare for the fall, as well as a general garden group meeting. I also wanted to see what interest we had in a little class on canning vegetables. Suzanne has offered and expressed an interest in holding a small class on what she has learned about canning.

Thanks again to Steve Caskie who was able to mow the grass in the garden! Also a big thank you to Lara Hurysz for taking those huge donations to New Bethany! Thank you to Jane for watering and keeping an eye on our newly sprouting plot! Thank you to the Kiefner family for all their help with picking! If I missed anyone, thank you too! I truly appreciate everyone’s help!

Below is a list of our last donations.
09/09 — 35 lbs. to New Bethany (Jason) –Tomatoes, Peppers, Carrots and Zucchini!
09/05 — 40 lbs. to Trinity (Carol) –Tomatoes, carrots!
08/29 — 80 lbs. to New Bethany (Lara) –Tomatoes, squash and kale!

Keep up the wonderful work, and we appreciate everyone’s effort.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks,
Jason & Jaimee
