Garden Updates — 09/27/2019 — 235 lbs. Donated

Hello Gardeners,

Things are definitely slowing down for the season.  As of October 1st, I will only look to do one collection per week until clean up day.  Please remember that final Garden clean up will be on Sunday, October 20 between and after services.

Also, a reminder if you have any batteries to recycle, we will be making one more collection this year for the October 5th date.  I’m very thankful to Ardis C. & Sue H. for their recent donations to help offset those costs at .75/lb.

We have 2 donations to report:

09/23/2019 – 10 lbs. – Trinity Soup Kitchen –Peppers, Tomatoes, Chinese Okra.  Thank you Wendy A. again!

09/26/2019 – 3 lbs. – Northeast Ministries – Peppers, Tomatoes

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Thanks,

Jason

Garden Updates — 08/26/19 — 179 lbs. Doanted

Hello Gardeners,

We’ve had a couple decent sized harvests the last few days.  Tomatoes are starting to change color and ripen.  It’s good to get these for harvest on the early side, as I’m seeing quite a few that are getting soft spots or insects are burrowing into.  If we catch the produce early it’s no problem to let it ripen indoors!  We also had a great couple of donations of beans!  Really appreciate that.

Wanted to give a shout out to Chris F. for mowing the garden and trimming along the fence.  It certainly looks much better, and I really appreciate the help.

Some donations to report:

08/23/2019 – 15 lbs. – Second Harvest Food Bank – Beans, Cucumber, Squash Tomatoes

08/26/2019 – 22 lbs. – Northeast Ministries – Beans, Peppers, Acorn Squash, Tomatoes

Thanks,

Jason

Garden Updates — 08/19/2019 –142 lbs. Donated

Hello Gardeners,

We are now up to 142 lbs. donated, however, our harvest continues to be on the light side.  We’re hoping some of the recent rainfall will perk up those tomatoes a bit.  The squash plants may be about done for the season, not sure if they will hang in there or not!

I’m looking for someone to volunteer mowing this week.  Please let me know if you can do it!

Garden Updates — 08/13/2019 — 127 lbs. Donated

Hello Gardeners,

Last week I mowed, pulled some weeds and tried to put out these Havahart Deep repellent modules: https://www.amazon.com/Havahart-DO5600-B-Weatherproof-Repellent-Vegetable/dp/B00WW0UOK2. It was worth a try, but based on recent evidence, I don’t believe they have helped much.

We are now up to 127 lbs. donated, however, our harvest is light compared to prior years at this time: 8/11/2018: 177 lbs., 8/11/2017 180 lbs., 8/25/2016 350 lbs.

Some donations to report:

08/01/2019 – 6 lbs. – Second Harvest – Cucumber, Beans, Squash.
08/05/2019 – 7 lbs. – New Bethany Ministries – Peppers, Beans, Cherry Tomatoes, Radishes, Cucumber, Zucchini.
08/08/2019 – 9 lbs. – Second Harvest – Peppers, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Zucchini.
08/12/2019 – 9 lbs. – Trinity Soup Kitchen – Peppers, Beans, Summer Squash, Cucumber, Zucchini.

Thanks,
Jason

Garden Updates — 07/19/2019 — 72 lbs. Donated

Hello Gardeners,

More harvests to report — the squash and zucchini are coming in like gang busters.

07/15/2019 – 16 lbs. – Second Harvest Food Bank –Radishes, Cucumber, Squash, Zucchini, beans.

07/19/2019 – 35 lbs. – Trinity Soup Kitchen –Radishes, Cucumber, Squash, Zucchini, beans.

Just checking to see if anyone knows what happened to the 100 ft. green expandable hose that we had. I’m not sure if another group borrowed and forgot to return it, but at the beginning of the season it went missing. For now I replaced it with another regular hose, but if anyone knows it’s whereabouts please let me know.

Thanks,

Jason

Garden Updates — 07/14/2019 — 21 lbs. Donated.

Hello Gardeners,

I wanted to share that we made our first donation for the season.  We had several large cucumber as well as the first of some squash.  Will also be seeing what can be picked tonight and adding that with Chris F.’s zucchini in a drop off Monday morning.

07/11/2019 – 21 lbs. – Trinity Soup Kitchen –Radishes, Cucumber, Squash, Zucchini, beans.

As things start to accelerate their growth, so are the weeds.  It’s important to try to keep your plots weeded, especially as the hot weather continues and people are getting up there less frequently.  I’d like to plan our next workday on July 21st around 11:30AM.  A group of us should be able to quickly catch up on maintenance and weeding.

The lawn mower is in working order and available for anyone willing to mow inside the garden.  Just be careful when starting to be on the lookout for mice.  Even after the repair, you can see in the enclosed image that a nest was built inside the mower and it almost caught fire.

I installed the gate posts, which should make securing the garden much easier.  As I continue to secure the fencing, groundhog continue to find ways in.  Please use fencing around your beds where possible.

Thanks and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Jason
